As your child learns and grows in kindergarten, here are some fun things you can try at home to practice the skills we are learning in the classroom.
Play rhyming games, sing nursery rhymes, review word families (ex: cat, hat, mat, etc).
Practice your numbers by reading, counting, writing, and matching numbers to groups of objects.
Practice the ABC's. Have your child not just sing, but read, write, match uppercase to lowercase letters, identify letter sounds, put the letters of the alphabet in order from A to Z! In the car, have your child identify letters on road signs or license plates. Have your child practice thinking of words that begin with each letter.
Practice writing! Have your child write grocery lists, letters to grandparents or aunts and uncles. They could make a special card for someone and write inside.
READ, READ, READ! Read with your child daily and encourage your child to discuss the book with you.
Some questions you can ask your child are:
- What was your favorite part?
- Who are the characters?
- Where is the setting?
- What happened first? Next? Last?
- What do you think will happen next in the story?
Can you find a capital letter?
Where is a lowercase letter?
How many words are on this page?
What is at the end of this sentence? (Period, exclamation point, question mark).
