Writers' Workshop
Your child will grow a lot as a writer during their kindergarten year. We use a workshop model to teach writing as well. Our focus is to teach narrative, expository, and informational writing. Throughout the year the following units are taught to your child:
Unit 1 - Launching Writers' Workshop (Narrative)
Unit 2 - List & Label (Show & Tell - Informative)
Unit 3 - Writing for Readers (Narrative)
Unit 4 - Writing How-To Books (Informative)
Unit 5 - Opinion/Persuasive Writing
Unit 6 - All About Books (Informative)
Unit 7 - Independent Writing Projects Across the Genres
Throughout the year you will see your child move through the stages of writing and begin using their sounds to write the beginning of words, the end of words, and then finally adding the medial sounds in words. You will see your child apply mechanics of writing (spacing, punctuation, capitalization) as they grow throughout the year. Lastly, you'll begin to see your child use their sight words in combination with their sounds to write phonetically to communicate their ideas across three pages or more of paper.
